Richard Giles is the CEO of Recommendation Ventures, a recommendation engine service provider, one of Australia’s top ten web 2.0 applications, and winner of the Australian Startup Carnival 2008.
Richard has been in the technology industry for more than 18 years, starting his career with a mobile phone company in 1990 when mobile phones weren’t as mobile.
Richard was an Australian web pioneer in the early-nineties, designing corporate websites while still at University in 1994, and was one of Curtin Universities first lecturers on the topic of the World Wide Web in 1995.
In 1996, after completing his degree in Commerce, he worked for one of Australia’s first web development companies, and then with a major ISP selling Internet connections to companies when they thought they could do without.
Richard then worked for Sun Microsystems for nine years as a Systems Engineer, Partner Account Manager, and Senior Account Manager. While there he started one of Sun’s first podcasts, interviewing executives like Jonathan Schwartz, Andy Bechtolsheim, David Yen, and Hal Stern.
Richard left Sun in 2006 after working in his spare time to author two books: Podcasting Pocket Guide, and How To Use Flickr: The Digital Photography Revolution.
He then co-founded Recommendation Ventures, which he now runs as CEO. The company provides a recommendation engine to retail, media, and content web sites, and is responsible for Scouta.
Richard’s achievements include winning the Best Australian Podcast of the Year 2006, authoring two books, launching Scouta, and managing Recommendation Ventures.
Richard is currently on the committee of the Australian Web Industry Association responsible for marketing. He also presents at a range of events about the Internet and Social Media.

richard-
i googled :cat with dislocated pelvis: – and your cat, aspen.
by reading the date on your blog entry, i know that his accident was a while ago; but i was hoping to get an update – as to his long term recovery. can you offer up any new-news?
my cat :temporary jones: just returned from a “missing” status to a “found and injured” status of 8 days. she was diagnosed at the vet today as having a dislocated pelvis.
i thought since you and aspen have been though this, you might be able to offer some assistance, guidance or anything you may deem useful.
so, if time permits, please reply.

Aspen recovered really well. After about a month locked in a cage, which wasn’t much fun, he was let out and he slowly recovered. He’d always been a little clumsy, and not as agile as Pixel (his smaller sister), but he now climbs trees, jumps over walls, and gets in as much trouble as before. I wouldn’t know that he had the accident.
I’m guessing that the vet has offered to do surgery. I’d take them up on it. From what our vet said, they’d put a dog down in the same situation because they’d never recover properly, but cats handle it well. That’s definately the case with Aspen. Cost a lot, but he’s still about and that matters.
Hope that helps.

I did a google search on my name and yours came up with some interesting similarities. I too was born and lived in Perth, West Australia. My family moved to the United States in September 1976. Just thought it was weird seeing my name and the location of my birthplace the same as yours.
Have a great one.

I must say Richard, I’m glad your blog is now top of Google for “Richard Giles” as I’m too lazy to do anything with my domain and I don’t deserve it!
Keep up the good work
