There’s a Audioblogging Manifesto. All negative of course. Maciej explains what’s wrong with podcasts. Now the thing is that we can hear his passion, and gee, the music we hear in the background really adds emphasis. I don’t think I would have lasted a paragraph had I had to read it.

While I agree that the Audioblogging Manifesto is quite negative about digital audio in general, to be fair to Maciej the AB Manifesto was written and posted in August 2004 and, if my Dave & Adam history is correct, the first recognisable podcast (ie Morning Coffee Notes with Dave and Adam talking it up) was something like September 2004. Even if that’s wrong (which it might be since I’m working from memory), it’s also worth pointing out that a lot of AudioBlogging IS really waffle (which isn’t to say it has no place, but it certainly isn’t the best way to communicate, say, detailed information that requires a certain exactness). Even with the new (Mac-only so far) bookmarking in certain podcasts, text is still a lot more effective for many uses. Podcasting, of course, certainly has its own strengths and mass appeal (as the sudden accessibility thru iTunes 4.9 proved). I’m actually going to be asking some of my students to create their own podcasts as part of a course on Participatory Culture this semester, but I’ll also be using the Manifesto to make them think thru the strengths and weaknesses of the emerging podcast mediatype!
Oh, and Richard, I’ll be fascinated to hear more about the Podcasting Book you’re co-authoring!
