+8GMT’ed.

February 27, 2005

We just had a referendum in Western Australia. Two questions were asked.

Question 1
Do you believe that the Western Australian community would benefit if trading hours in the Perth Metropolitan Area were extended to allow general retail shops to trade until 9 pm Monday to Friday?

Question 2
Do you believe that the Western Australian community would benefit if trading hours in the Perth Metropolitan Area were extended to allow general retail shops to trade for 6 hours on Sunday?

As it turns out, it looks like the majority answered “no” and “no”.

Personally this is really frustrating, since I’ve been hankering for greater trading hours. Perth is a small city, just over a million people, so it lacks any great energy, and when it’s dead, it’s dead. A great place to retire.

Anyway, I’m driving home today, reflecting on the result and how I’ve also noticed that +8GMT happens to be a very quiet time zone online. So not only am I in a quiet city, when I escape online, I’m in a quiet time zone.

“Damn it”, I think to myself. “I know, I’ll start a +8GMT revolution. I’ll liven it up, get people involved in my time zone.”

At that point I realise just how Eastern Standard Tribe that was, and had a laugh.

The Day Of The Podcast.

Nielsen Radio Listening Diary, originally uploaded by rich115.

It’s ironic that I am asked by Nielsen Media Research to complete a Radio Listening Diary for the week I start my very own podcast. Since I bought my iPod a couple of years ago I’ve rarely listened to the radio. Know I almost exclusively listen to podcasts like G’day World and Adam Curry’s Daily Source Code.

Well, on the very same day the survey starts The Gadget Show was launched as part of The Podcast Network.

The process actually started a few weeks ago when I began discussions with Cam and Mick. Since then I’ve been teeing up interviews and conducting a few. It’s really been an amazing process. Especially since I had the opportunity to chat with Cory Doctorow on my very first show.

Lesson 1 : Get a good Microphone.
Lesson 2 : Learn to work around Skype latency.
Lesson 3 : Cut down on the word ummmm.

More lessons to come I’m sure.

Dimensional Blogosphere.

February 5, 2005

Does anyone else agree that the blogosphere is completely flat from an individuals point of view, becoming more and more 3 dimensional the greater their online network?

If markets are conversations, then that’s all the blogosphere is. If an individual posts to their blog, and no one reads it, then it’s 0 dimensional. If one person reads it, it becomes 2 dimensional. When that person makes a comment back it becomes more three dimensional. The more people involved in the conversation, the more 3 dimensional that individuals experience becomes.
