Is it possible to have Metadata Addiction. Perhaps it’s a type of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

I think I have iTunes MA.

A few months ago I became quite obsessive about ensuring all the ID3 Tag information was correct in iTunes. First I added the year each song was recorded, usually using Gracenote. Given the 1500+ songs I now have this took some time. Having this data meant I could create iTunes Smart Playlists that stuck to the decade that the song was released. Great for 80s Parties.

Next I included the Beats Per Minute for most of my tracks. Having BPM now gave me a Slow and a Fast Playlist. Useful for background music at dinner or music to pump me up while exercising. Well OK, when I get around to starting to exercise. I used Ask The DJ to help with this. It has a funky little feature that works out the BPM for each track and exports the data to the ID3 tag (Tip : make sure you convert to ID3 v2.2 in iTunes).

Recently, when I’ve added new tracks, I’ll also include the Cover Artwork. I’m not sure why. The excuse that swims around my head is that shortly we’ll have an iPod that displays this Artwork when playing tracks. Not incredibly useful, but fun. Today I discovered Clutter. A neat little application for Mac OS X that grabs the Artwork from Amazon when iTunes plays a track. You can then export it to iTunes and it adds it to the file.

I’m guessing this is going to take me a while, but, if anyone else is adding any other useful metadata to iTunes, let me know.
