Well worth a read to help understand the misunderstood Kevin Mitnick is the “Lost Chapter” from his latest book. It explains how the reporter John Markoff printed outrageous articles that inaccurately portrayed Mitnick as a hacker that caused millions of dollars worth of damage. The chapter should be read by everyone that doesn’t understand the power held by reporters. Thanks to Wired and the supplier of the text in Yahoo Group’s Kevin’s Story. I’ve put a text file of the document here.

This should be in the book.
yea, poor misunderstood kevin. he was arrested five times over twenty years. Five convictions, three felonies as an adult. he stole software, caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost time and basically destroyed openness on the Internet. great guy. He read Markoff’s email secretly for over three years. He was a loser.
For those wanting a good understanding of Mitnick, it is worth reading
The Fugitive Game: Online With Kevin Mitnick by by Jonathan Littman.
Takedown: The Pursuit and Capture of Kevin Mitnick, America’s Most Wanted Computer Outlaw-By the Man Who Did It by Tsutomu Shimomura and John Markoff is widely regarded as being very biased and not quite factual.
