Stan Liebowitz is interviewed in this article (File sharing: Innocent until proven guilty) about how little impact the P2P networks have had on the Recording Industry. I’d like to suggest another reason for the current low impact. The majority of people have the perception that burning an Audio CD is not simple. It’s only recently that it has become straight-forward for a non-technical user. So most people don’t try.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not defending the recording industries findings that their business is being impacted. In fact I don’t care either way. What I do suggest though, as frequent readers no doubt know, is just because the music business has worked this way for X many years, does not mean that this is the way it must work forever. It will change one day, and it looks like that day is close.
By the way, if anyone knows where to find details about Liebowitz’s book, “Rethinking the Networked Economy”, please let me know.
